The definition to this term can be rightly stated as "An exotic pet is a rare or unusual creature kept as a pet, or a creature kept as a pet which is not commonly thought of as a pet."

These are also mainly animals that are not domesticated at ALL. Vet costs will be higher,certain diets followed, and these animals can be more dangerous around children or when provoked. New additions also need to be checked for diseases, especially the rainforest sort. Having said this, wild animals are also more likely to be hurt by human diseases and should not be exposed to them.

Exotic pets have always been kept by wealthier people in history, and been a symbol of that wealth. Today it is much easier to obtain an Exotic Pet, although there are still legal issues with some animals, that are endangered, or in a situation where removing the animal from its habitat would effect the environment in a negative way. Keeping an exotic pet can be a very interesting experience, as these animals are so different. They are very untraditional and its unlikely that many people will have a monitor lizard or a kinkajou like you do.

They may be able to be the best companions for you, just make sure you learn plenty about their diet, what environments suitable for them, and how aggressive they are.
